You do not need a workshop. You do not need to spend all Saturday on it.

You need 30 focused minutes once a month.

This routine has saved me thousands over the years, and more importantly, it has prevented ruined trips.

This is the exact system I’d recommend to any RV owner.

Why Monthly Beats Annual

Many owners think maintenance is something you do once a year before camping season.

That mindset causes problems.

RVs sit in weather. They vibrate when traveling. Plastic dries out. Water finds weak spots. Batteries discharge. Rodents move in.

A quick monthly routine catches issues early.

That means:

Lower repair bills

Longer roof life

Better battery life

Safer tires

Fewer surprise failures

Less stress before trips

Better resale value

The 30-Minute Monthly Routine

Get the shiny one. It doesn’t.

New often means:

Warranty appointments

Loose trim pieces

Minor plumbing leaks

Cabinet doors needing adjustment

Slide-out tweaks

Electronics glitches

Sealant touch-ups

And the minute you tow it off the lot, depreciation starts working against you.

Some RVs lose serious value in the first few years.

So you pay top dollar, then spend time fixing little issues while the value drops.

That’s a hard pill to swallow.

The Truth About Used RVs

A good used RV can be a smart family move.

Someone else already absorbed the big depreciation hit.

Many early factory bugs have already been found and fixed.

Sometimes the owner also includes useful extras:

Weight distribution hitch

Sewer hoses

Water pressure regulator

Leveling blocks

Surge protector

Solar add-ons

Upgraded mattress

Kitchen gear

That can save you hundreds or even thousands.

But buying used without inspecting it properly is where people get burned.

Water damage, roof neglect, bad tires, soft floors, mold, neglected bearings, cracked seals, hidden leaks, old batteries, and sketchy wiring can turn a “deal” into a money pit.

What I’d Do With My Own Money

If I were buying today for my family, I’d likely do this:

Option 1: Buy a 3 to 7 Year Old RV

This is the sweet spot for many buyers.

Why?

Initial depreciation already happened

Modern enough to have decent features

Old enough that common defects may be fixed

Often significantly cheaper than new

I’d look for one-owner units with maintenance records.

That tells a story.

Clean paperwork often means a careful owner.

Option 2: Spend Money on Inspection, Not Emotion

I would never skip a professional RV inspection.

Ever.

The best few hundred dollars you spend can save you thousands.

You want roof, frame, appliances, plumbing, electrical, propane, moisture readings, tires, brakes, and slide systems checked.

Pretty cushions do not matter if the roof leaks.

Option 3: Keep Cash for Repairs and Upgrades

Even a good used RV will need something.

That’s normal.

I’d rather buy below budget and keep money aside for:

New tires

Battery upgrades

Brake service

Mattress replacement

Suspension improvements

Solar setup

Maintenance supplies

That is smarter than being payment-maxed on a brand-new unit.

When I Would Buy New

There are times buying new makes sense.

I’d consider it if:

You got a truly strong deal

Financing terms heavily favored new

You plan to keep it a long time

You want a specific floorplan that’s hard to find used

You are handy and patient with warranty fixes

If you buy new, do a detailed pre-delivery inspection. Do not rush that day.

Run everything.

Every light, faucet, outlet, slide, awning, appliance, toilet, and latch.

My Honest Advice for Families

If money matters, and for most families it does, I think used is often the wiser path.

Not junk used.

Well-kept used.

There’s pride in buying smart. There’s freedom in lower payments. There’s peace in having repair money left over.

And in family life, peace matters more than shiny countertops.

Final Verdict

If it were my own money today:

I’d buy a clean, inspected, well-maintained used RV that’s a few years old.

Then I’d use the savings for trips with the family.

Because the best memories come from where you go, not whether you were the first owner.

The RV Field Guide is a reader-supported publication. They come from small beginner mistakes repeated over time.

A lot of first-time owners think damage happens from crashes, storms, or bad luck. Sometimes it does. But more often, it comes from neglect, rushing, or not understanding how these machines actually work.

An RV is part house, part vehicle, part plumbing system, part electrical system, and part rolling earthquake every time you drive it down the road.

Here are the most common mistakes I’ve seen beginners make, and how to avoid them.

The RV Field Guide is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

1. Ignoring Roof Maintenance

The roof is one of the biggest silent killers of RV value.

A tiny crack in sealant can let water in. Water damage spreads slowly, then suddenly becomes a major issue. Rotten wood, mold, stained ceilings, soft walls, delamination, none of it is cheap.

What to do:

Inspect roof seams every season

Reseal problem areas early

Keep branches off the roof

Clean debris regularly

A $20 tube of sealant can save a $10,000 repair.

2. Overloading the RV

Many beginners pack an RV like they are moving houses.

Tools, bikes, grills, clothes, coolers, generators, extra water, and every kitchen item known to man.

Too much weight damages:

Tires

Suspension

Bearings

Brakes

Fuel economy

Handling safety

Know your cargo carrying capacity and respect it.

3. Driving on Old or Underinflated Tires

RV tires often age out before they wear out.

They may look fine, but sun exposure, sitting still, and time weaken them. Then comes the blowout.

Blowouts can rip wheel wells, wiring, plumbing lines, and sidewalls.

Check:

Tire age

Proper PSI when cold

Cracks in sidewalls

Uneven wear

Good tires are cheaper than roadside body damage.

4. Forgetting Battery Maintenance

Dead batteries frustrate beginners constantly.

Lead acid batteries need water checks. All batteries need proper charging. Letting batteries sit discharged shortens life fast.

What happens:

No lights

No furnace fan

No water pump

Generator starting issues

Replacement costs sooner than expected

A simple battery monitor helps a lot.

5. Not Winterizing Properly

If you live where it freezes, water left in lines can become expensive fast.

Frozen pipes split. Faucets crack. Pumps break. Water heaters get damaged.

I’ve seen people lose an entire spring camping season because they skipped one hour of winter prep.

Use RV antifreeze properly, bypass the water heater, and protect every line.

6. Backing Up Without Checking Clearance

Every experienced RVer has seen it:

Tree branch meets roof corner

Post meets bumper

Awning meets building

Ladder meets power pedestal

Use a spotter. Get out and look. Take your time.

Pride heals faster than fiberglass.

7. Leaving Slides or Awnings Out in Bad Weather

Slides and awnings are convenient, but wind does not care.

Strong gusts can bend arms, tear fabric, or damage mechanisms.

If weather turns ugly:

Bring awnings in early

Retract slides if hail or major storms threaten

Never leave campsite for the day with awning out in questionable weather

8. Skipping Regular Seal and Caulk Checks

Windows, lights, trim, vents, doors, every opening matters.

Once sealant dries out, water finds its way in.

Make inspections part of your routine. Ten minutes every trip can prevent years of regret.

9. Running Appliances on Wrong Power

Many beginners plug into questionable household outlets using cheap adapters.

Low voltage can damage air conditioners, microwaves, converters, and electronics.

Use:

Quality surge protector

EMS protection system

Proper gauge extension cord

Correct campground hookup procedures

Electric mistakes can get expensive quickly.

10. Thinking “I’ll Deal With It Later”

This is the biggest one.

Small leak. Strange tire wear. Soft floor spot. Weak battery. Odd smell. Minor crack.

Beginners postpone it. Then the repair triples in size.

RVs reward owners who stay ahead of problems.

My Honest Advice After Years of RV Ownership

If you want your RV to last, treat it less like a toy and more like a cabin on wheels.

That means:

Inspect often

Fix small things early

Learn the systems

Move slowly when parking

Respect weight limits

Keep water out at all costs

Do that, and you’ll save money, stress, and a lot of ruined weekends.

Final Thought

Most beginner RV damage is preventable.

You do not need to know everything on day one. You just need to build good habits early.

That’s how average owners become experienced owners.

The RV Field Guide is a reader-supported publication. Bigger rigs often have 50-amp hookups.

30 amps x 120 volts = 3,600 watts max

50 amps x 120 volts x 2 legs = 12,000 watts max

That means if you have a 30-amp system, you can run a combination of appliances that draw up to 3,600 watts at once.

That’s it. Turn on your A/C, microwave, and electric water heater at the same time, and you’ll find out exactly where the edge is.

Rule of thumb: If it makes heat or cold, it draws a lot of power.

DC Power: Your Batteries at Work

When you're not plugged in, things still work—thanks to your 12V battery system. This powers:

Overhead lights

Water pump

Furnace fan

Slide motors

Control boards for appliances

But it doesn't run your microwave, air conditioner, or regular wall outlets unless you have an inverter (more on that in a minute).

Your battery life depends on:

Amp-hour rating (how much power it holds)

What you’re running

Whether you’re recharging (via solar, generator, or driving)

If your lights start dimming or your water pump gets weak, your battery’s probably low.

Inverters vs. Converters: Know the Difference

These two get mixed up all the time:

A converter turns AC power into DC to charge your battery (standard in most RVs).

An inverter turns DC battery power into AC so you can use regular outlets when off-grid (not always included).

So if you’re boondocking and want to plug in a laptop or coffee maker?

You’ll need an inverter, and enough battery juice to back it up.

What You Can (and Can’t) Plug In Safely

Here’s a rough breakdown of what’s safe to run, especially if you’re on a 30-amp setup:
<div One heat-producing appliance at a time.

What Happens When You Overload It?

If you exceed your amp limit, you’ll trip a breaker, either at the pedestal (campground outlet) or in your RV’s panel. Worst case? You fry something expensive.

Keep a mental tally of what’s on.

If you need to run the A/C and microwave, turn off the water heater or other energy hogs first.

Tools That Make It Easier (But Aren’t Salesy)

Surge Protector – Protects against sketchy campground wiring. A must.

Multimeter – Handy for checking voltage or battery status.

Amp/Volt Display – Some RVs have them built in. If not, install a simple battery monitor to avoid surprises.

Bottom Line: Be Smart, Stay Powered

Your RV’s electrical system isn’t that complicated once you know what’s going on behind the outlets.

Stay under your amp limits, know what each power source can handle, and when in doubt, turn something off before turning something else on.

Because nobody wants to be the one flipping breakers while the kids ask when the A/C’s coming back on.

Got questions about your RV setup?

Or want a cheat sheet you can print and stick to the fuse panel?

Let me know, I’m putting one together.

Until next time, travel smart, and stay powered.

Thanks for reading The RV Field Guide! Again.

But now?

We’ve got it down to about 20 minutes.

Not perfect. Not military-grade precise.

But smooth enough that we’re eating snacks and unfolding chairs while our neighbors are still leveling.

Here’s how we got there.

Thanks for reading The RV Field Guide! We assigned roles early. And we stick to them.

We found that setup chaos comes mostly from too many people doing too many random things at once.

So we made roles. Not rigid, just clear.

Me (Parent 1): I handle leveling, chocks, and hookups (power/water/sewer). Also, I’m the "final say" person when something weird comes up.

My partner (Parent 2): Gets the interior kid-ready — slides out, fridge checked, anything fragile stowed, AC on if needed, snack set-up to stop hanger-related emergencies.

Kid 1 (Oldest): Responsible for the leveling blocks. Has a little checklist and likes the sense of duty.

Kid 2 (Middle): Helps unload chairs, scooter, and whatever outdoor gear is allowed out first.

Kid 3 (Youngest): Usually distracted. We give them “important” jobs like holding the dog leash or announcing how long it took to park. Keeps them engaged enough not to vanish.

The Dog: Wild card. Usually tied up. Occasionally tangled in everything. We love him anyway.

2. We don’t talk much during backing in. That was a marriage saver.

We made a pact: no communication from outside the truck unless it's life-or-death or we’re about to hit a tree.

One person backs up the rig. The other uses simple hand signals.

No yelling. No passive-aggressive pointing. No walkie-talkies we forgot to charge anyway.

This alone shaved 10 minutes of frustration off every arrival.

3. Our process, step by step:

Here’s our basic flow. Same routine, every time:

Pull into site. Everyone stays in the truck until we're stopped.

Check slope and tree clearance. (Takes 1 minute, prevents disaster.)

Level side to side using blocks. (Kid 1 loves this part.)

Chock wheels + unhook truck.

Level front to back. Electric tongue jack is the unsung hero of RV life.

Slide out. (We double-check clearance before we hit the button. We learned the hard way.)

Hook up power first. Then water. Then sewer, if we’re staying longer than two nights.

Inside setup begins while I’m outside: Slides checked, fridge on propane if needed, rugs out, stuff stowed.

Outdoor stuff out: chairs, table, mat, toys. Dog gets tied where she won’t trip us every 4 minutes.

Check everything once. Then chill.

All in?

Usually 17 to 22 minutes.

4. Things we stopped doing that helped

Trying to be fast. Funny enough, trying to rush made us slower. We just do it smoothly now.

Overpacking gear we didn’t use. Less unpacking = faster setup.

Letting the kids roam during setup. Now they have little jobs. It keeps them in the zone.

Also? We gave up the dream that it has to be quiet or peaceful.

It’s not. It’s a rolling home being reassembled every few days.

As long as it’s functional and nobody’s bleeding, we call it a win.

5. Our only rule: We set up first, relax second.

Even if the lake is calling. Even if the pool has a waterslide.

We’ve learned (painfully) that skipping steps leads to disasters like:

forgetting to chock and rolling 3 feet downhill

losing 5 gallons of fresh water because someone forgot to check a valve

realizing the fridge isn’t on and all the cheese is soft

Now the kids know: We set up first. Then fun.

And honestly? They’ve gotten fast.

They love being part of the system. There's something satisfying about being a well-oiled machine—even if that machine smells like bug spray and runs on granola bars.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear:
What’s your setup routine like? Any genius hacks or major fails? It’s about connection.

People assume you hit the road because you’re running from something.
And maybe there’s a little truth to that—routine, noise, screens, bills. The blur of weeks that all start to feel the same.

But for us, RVing isn’t about running away.

It’s about running toward something slower. Simpler. Closer.

On the road, we’re not rushing out the door every morning in a swirl of forgotten lunches and mismatched socks.
We wake up together. We eat outside more. We talk more. Sometimes we fight more too, but even that feels more honest.

You don’t get to hide in an RV. Not from each other. Not from yourself.

The space is small, but the life feels bigger.

Our rig is about 30 feet long. That’s roughly the size of a generous hallway. With wheels.

You learn to do everything with intention: where you step, what you pack, how you store the peanut butter so it doesn’t fly across the room on travel days.

And you also learn that most of the stuff you thought you needed... you don’t.

Instead, you trade space for sunsets. Convenience for campfires.

You trade Netflix marathons for bike rides, hikes, or watching your youngest try to roast a marshmallow without setting their hair on fire.

We don’t live in a Pinterest-perfect van. It’s messy. It’s noisy.
But honestly? It’s alive.

Our kids see more than playgrounds and parking lots.

Since we started RVing, our kids have:

Seen bison walk past the truck in Manitoba

Hiked to hot springs in BC

Learned how to build a fire, empty the grey tank, and spot poison ivy

Played cards in the rain, made friends in campground pools, and gotten lost in small-town farmer’s markets

They’ve also said things like:

“Can we just stay at a normal house with a dishwasher?”
and, “Why do we have to drive again today?”

And that’s part of the magic too.

They’re learning that adventure isn’t always glamorous.

That boredom isn’t the enemy.

That being uncomfortable sometimes makes you appreciate comfort when it comes back around.

We fight. Then we forgive faster.

RV life is not all Zen and mountain views.
It’s spilled milk in the fridge and someone stepping on your face trying to get down from the top bunk.

It’s arguments about where the tablet charger is. Again.
It’s a weird smell that nobody wants to claim.

But in a space this small, you have to move on. You can’t sulk in separate rooms.
You learn to apologize faster. To talk through things.
To laugh about them—eventually.

It’s not perfect, but it’s real. And that’s enough.

The road resets us.

Every time we leave, I feel it.

That little moment when we pull away from the driveway, or the last gas station, or the grocery store outside town—when the hum of the tires settles and the kids fall into a rhythm, and I realize:

We’re doing this. Again.
We’re choosing movement, togetherness, and a little bit of chaos—on purpose.

And no matter how many things go wrong (and they do), I never regret it.
Because somehow, out here, we remember who we are.

A family. On the road. Figuring it out. Together.

Thanks for reading,
Craig
The RV Field Guide

Thanks for reading The RV Field Guide!
